The Swedish Finn Historical Society

Lead Researcher

Today, 5.5% of Finland's population speak Swedish as their mother tongue. During the period of the Great Immigration (1870–1920) Swedish speakers left at twice the rate of Finnish speakers. Some areas of Swedish Finland lost 10% of their population. The Swedish Finn Historical Society mission is to document every emigrant from Swedish-speaking Finland, connect our members to their roots in Finland, and celebrate our culture. The emigrants' stories didn't stop when they left home. We are here to fill in the blanks where we can, share immigrant stories, and comfort former Swedes when they receive Finnish DNA results.
