  1. A primer on the issues facing actors and writers on the lines. It’s the first double strike in 63 years. Think of it like Haley’s Comet — you may want to pause what you’re doing a sec and take a look.
  2. Down to a matter of hours now. SAG-AFTRA agrees to federal arbitration. Studios hope the US gov’t can head off a strike at midnight. There was no such offer made to WGA on eve of strike. Shows how serious the studios regard a potential shutdown.
  3. “Don’t worry, AI still only has the brain of a squirrel” is not as reassuring as they think it sounds. If a squirrel started writing my kid’s essays I would renounce my worldly belongings and move to a mountain cave.

  7. Idea: a town square where everyone can stand on their own soapbox. Except you can pay for a slightly taller, bluer soapbox. And you can only listen to a certain number of people a day. Unless you paid for the blue soapbox, in which case you can listen to twice that number of peop
  8. This is a big reason why the WGA is striking. Better deals, better treatment, better working situations, better residuals in streaming and a fair deal on AI.
  9. Me: Do you want to see Dial of Destiny? My 11-yr-old: No. We need new things. Stop making sequels. Chip off the ol’ block.
  10. Arguing over whether an AI can write a passable movie script misses the crux (and danger) of AI’s impact on the entertainment industry, and by extension, our culture. Instead of asking whether AI can write a movie, we should be asking can it collaborate .
  11. Fun fact: if the writers don’t get a contract by Tuesday, there will be no Fall season on network TV. There simply won’t be enough time to write and produce those shows. This obviously benefits the streamers. What makes this #wgastrike unique is the membership of the AMPTP is a c

  14. Week 9 of the #wgastrike begins. For most people, going 9 weeks without pay would be cataclysmic. For writers, that’s a Tuesday. Late pay, no pay, free work — it all has to stop. Would studio CEOs accept late payment? Not on your damn life. #wgastrong #writing #film #movies #tv #C
  15. 50 days in, you might be asking, why are the writers striking again? Simply put, we’re striking to: — regain lost jobs — curb “free work” practices — raise minimum pay — ban AI from writing — preserve our healthcare Studios, by contrast, are stonewalling to: — protect less than 1% of re

  19. Yes, we’re still on strike, and no, we’re not tired.

We’re heading in to Week 7 of the WGA strike. I say that with pride, not weariness (the longest writers strike was 22 weeks, so in my head we’re still in the opening phases). The AMPTP’s strategy of divide-and-conquer is already underway. Last week’s tentative deal with the DGA wa
